AI SEO course
An AI SEO course is training in making websites, brands and content visible in the answers produced by generative artificial intelligence systems such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity, as distinct from ranking a page in a list of links. The subject is taught under several overlapping names: generative engine optimization (GEO), a term formalized in a research paper in November 2023; answer engine optimization (AEO); LLM optimization (LLMO); and AI search optimization.[1] Courses in the category range from free vendor academies of one to two hours to paid memberships with weekly live calls.[2]
The category grew out of a change in search itself. Google offered generative answers in Search as an experiment from May 2023 and rolled AI Overviews out to everyone in the United States in May 2024; OpenAI introduced ChatGPT search in October 2024; and Google introduced AI Mode in March 2025.[3][4][5][6] Google's own documentation states that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices, a position that sits at the center of the debate over what an AI SEO course can teach that an SEO course does not.[7]
What is an AI SEO course?
An AI SEO course is training in getting a website, brand or page retrieved, cited or named in answers written by AI systems such as Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity. It is taught under the overlapping names generative engine optimization (GEO), answer engine optimization (AEO) and LLM optimization (LLMO), and most courses keep conventional SEO in the syllabus.[1]
An AI SEO course teaches how answer systems built on large language models find, select and cite sources, and how a site, a brand or a page can be made more likely to be retrieved, quoted, cited or recommended in those answers. Most such systems combine a language model with a retrieval step over an index of documents, the design described as retrieval-augmented generation in a 2020 paper; the answer is written by the model, and the sources it drew on may be shown as citations.[20] An AI SEO course therefore deals with two things a conventional SEO course treats separately or not at all: being retrieved for the many related searches an AI system may issue for one question, and being chosen as a cited or named source once retrieved. Google describes this retrieval pattern in its own documentation as query fan-out, in which AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources to develop a response.[7]
The names used for the subject overlap without being exact synonyms. Generative engine optimization was formalized in a paper first posted to arXiv on 16 November 2023, whose authors introduced a benchmark of queries across domains and reported that the methods they tested could raise visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40%, with effectiveness varying by domain.[1] Answer engine optimization is the name HubSpot uses for its certification, which replaced its SEO certification on 25 June 2026.[9] Of the 27 programs in this site's category dataset, 15 name GEO on their public pages and 11 name AEO; several use only the phrases AI visibility or AI search.[2] The terms are defined in the AI SEO course glossary.
Why did AI SEO courses appear?
They followed generative answers into search. Google tested generative AI in Search from May 2023, rolled AI Overviews out across the United States in May 2024 and introduced AI Mode in March 2025, and OpenAI launched ChatGPT search in October 2024. As part of each answer moved from links into generated text, vendors, academies, instructors and communities began teaching visibility inside those answers.[3][4][6][5]
Generative answers reached mainstream search in stages. Google announced generative AI in Search, offered through Search Labs, on 10 May 2023, and announced on 14 May 2024 that AI Overviews were rolling out to everyone in the United States.[3][4] OpenAI introduced ChatGPT search, which answers with links to web sources, on 31 October 2024, and Google introduced AI Mode as a Search Labs experiment on 5 March 2025.[5][6] Each step moved part of the answer from the list of links into generated text, and courses followed that change: SEO tool vendors, marketing academies, online course platforms, independent instructors and paid communities all published training on the subject, and in June 2026 HubSpot replaced its SEO certification with AEO certifications.[9] The sequence of these events is set out in the history of AI SEO courses.
What does an AI SEO course teach?
How AI systems retrieve and cite sources, writing passages that can be extracted and quoted, entities, crawler access, earning mentions, and measuring citations and share of answer. Of the programs whose public page allows the check, 21 of 26 teach earning or measuring citations and 17 of 24 teach measurement of AI visibility.[2]
Public curricula in the category cover a recurring set of subjects: how AI systems retrieve and cite sources; structuring content so a passage can be extracted and quoted; entities and knowledge graphs; technical access for AI crawlers, including separate robots.txt user agents such as OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot; earning mentions and links on sites AI systems draw on; and measuring visibility through citations, share of answer and tracked prompts.[21] Most programs keep conventional SEO in the syllabus rather than replacing it. The table shows how often each subject appears on the public course pages in this site's dataset.
| Curriculum attribute | Courses whose public page shows it | Share | Not confirmable |
|---|---|---|---|
| Names generative engine optimization (GEO) | 15 of 24 | 62% | 3 |
| Names answer engine optimization (AEO) | 11 of 25 | 44% | 2 |
| Teaches earning or measuring citations and mentions in AI answers | 21 of 26 | 81% | 1 |
| Names entities or knowledge graphs | 9 of 24 | 38% | 3 |
| Teaches measuring AI visibility (citations, share of answer, prompts) | 17 of 24 | 71% | 3 |
| Also covers conventional SEO | 14 of 19 | 74% | 8 |
| Covers link or mention acquisition | 11 of 25 | 44% | 2 |
| Names ChatGPT | 20 of 27 | 74% | 0 |
Measurement is the most distinctive part of the subject. Semrush's free course, for example, describes moving from tracking keywords to tracking prompts and measuring AI visibility against competitors, and the GSDC certification lists share-of-model visibility tracking and citation frequency among its sections.[10][22] Some communities also teach tactics outside Google's published guidelines; the publisher of AI SEO Rainmakers, for instance, states that its material includes gray-hat and black-hat techniques.[18]
What formats do AI SEO courses come in?
Four: self-paced video courses (17), membership communities (6), live cohorts (2) and written guides (2), out of 27 programs in this site's dataset. Self-paced courses are usually free or a one-time purchase; communities charge monthly for a classroom, live calls and a member feed; cohorts run on fixed dates with an instructor.[2]
AI SEO courses are sold in four formats. Self-paced video courses are the most common and are usually a one-time purchase or free; live cohorts run on fixed dates with an instructor; membership communities, most of them hosted on Skool, charge a monthly fee for a classroom plus live calls and a member feed; and written guides are published as web manuals or curated roadmaps.[2] Of the 27 programs in the dataset, 8 include live access to an instructor.
| Format | Programs | Price range | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-paced course | 17 | Free to $997 | AEO Fundamentals, AI for SEO Training, AI Search and SEO Mastery Course |
| Live cohort | 2 | $499 to $549 | AEO Masterclass: AI Search Beyond SEO, From SEO to AEO: Optimizing for AI-led Search |
| Membership community | 6 | Free to $299 a month | AI Ranking, AI SEO Mastery Pro, AI SEO Operators |
| Written guide | 2 | Free | Learning AI Search (The Free AI Search Optimization Roadmap), The AI Search Manual |
How much does an AI SEO course cost?
From nothing to $299 a month. 12 of 27 programs are free; one-time courses cost $189.99 to $997 with a median of $497; and monthly memberships cost $27 to $299 with a median of $149, or $1,788 over a year.[8]
12 of the 27 programs are free, 2 of them free to audit with a paid certificate.[2] One-time prices run from $189.99 to $997 with a median of $497, and monthly memberships from $27 to $299 a month with a median of $149.[8] A monthly membership at the top of that range costs more in a year than any one-time course in the dataset. The price models, annualized costs and the costs beyond the fee, such as tool subscriptions some courses assume, are covered in AI SEO course cost.
Are there free AI SEO courses?
Yes. 12 of the 27 programs in the dataset are free, 2 of them free to audit with a paid certificate. Half come from SEO and marketing software companies such as HubSpot, Semrush, Ahrefs and Surfer; the others include the Open University's one-hour introduction, a free Skool community and two free written guides.[2]
Free courses in the category are mostly published by companies that sell SEO or marketing software, including HubSpot, Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Conductor and Georion, alongside the Open University's one-hour introduction and two free written guides, iPullRank's AI Search Manual and Aleyda Solis's Learning AI Search roadmap.[9][17][23] Charles Floate, who runs a paid AI SEO community, recommends iPullRank's manual as the best free education in the category.[24] The free options, their runtimes and their ties to paid tools are compared in free AI SEO courses.
Do AI SEO courses come with a certificate?
13 of 27 do, 6 do not and 8 do not say on their public page. Every certificate is issued by the organization that sells or hosts the course, and membership communities generally do not certify. HubSpot's AEO certifications replaced its SEO certification on 25 June 2026.[9]
13 of the 27 programs issue a certificate, 6 do not and 8 do not say on their public page.[2] In every case the certificate is issued by the organization that sells or hosts the course, whether a software vendor's academy, an online course platform, a training company or a university's open learning platform; memberships generally do not certify, and AI SEO Rainmakers ends its foundations course with a scored baseline rather than a certificate.[18] The certifying programs and their assessments are listed in AI SEO course certification.
Which AI SEO courses are best known?
Those from the largest providers: HubSpot Academy, Semrush Academy, Ahrefs Academy, Surfer Academy, Coursera and Udemy, alongside paid programs from CXL, Maven and Search Atlas, iPullRank's free manual, and memberships such as AI SEO Rainmakers. The table records attributes of a selection; it is not a ranking, and the full field is in the directory of AI SEO courses.[2]
| Course | Provider | Price | Format | Certificate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AEO Fundamentals[9] | HubSpot Academy | Free | Self-paced course | Yes |

The complete table of 27 programs, grouped by format and with the curriculum attributes of each, is the list of AI SEO courses. One of them, the paid community founded by Charles Floate in August 2026, has its own article at AI SEO Rainmakers.[18]
What does the data show about AI SEO courses?
44% of the 27 programs in this site's dataset are free, the median one-time course costs $497 and the median membership $149 a month, 48% issue a certificate, and only 8 include live access to an instructor. Free courses name citations and measurement about as often as paid ones.[2]
The full set of statistics, each computed from the dataset and numbered for citation, is on the AI SEO course findings page, and every program is listed in the directory of AI SEO courses.
How are AI SEO courses compared?
By price and price model, format, live access to an instructor, certificate, skill level, the subjects the curriculum names, and whether the material is updated. Charles Floate's comparison of 18 programs uses similar attributes plus his own scores; this site records the attributes without scores or a ranking.[24]
Published comparisons of AI SEO courses tend to record the same attributes: price and price model, format, whether an instructor is available live, whether a certificate is issued, the skill level addressed, and which subjects the curriculum names.[24] Charles Floate's comparison page lists 18 named programs with price, format, live access and level, scores them on his own rubric and leaves his own community unscored on conflict-of-interest grounds.[24] This site records those attributes without scores or a ranking, because the evidence available for most programs is the provider's own description; two further attributes it records are whether the provider says the material is updated, and when the page was last verified.[2] Of the 27 programs, 10 describe ongoing updates and the rest either sell a fixed course or do not say.
What are the criticisms of AI SEO courses?
Google states that no special optimization is needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices, so much of the subject overlaps with SEO. Other criticisms are that optimization effects vary by domain, outcome claims are hard to verify, free courses often teach with the publisher's own tools, and recorded material dates quickly.[7][1]
Overlap with conventional SEO
Google Search Central states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there are no additional requirements or special optimizations necessary to appear in them.[7] Courses that sell AI SEO as a separate discipline therefore teach, in Google's own framing, largely the same foundations as an SEO course; 14 of the 19 programs whose page allows the check also cover conventional SEO.[2]
Evidence and measurement
The research that named the field found that the effect of optimization methods varied by domain, and generative answers change with the model, the query and the moment they are produced.[1] Outcome claims in the category are hard to verify: the two paid-member reviews of one premium community found that none of its 31 platform reviews then visible reported a ranking, traffic figure, client win or dollar amount.[25]
Vendor courses and tools
Many free courses are published by software companies and teach with their own products. HubSpot's companion course is free, but its practical exercises require Marketing Hub Professional or the standalone AEO tool, and Semrush's course mixes strategy with walkthroughs of its AI Visibility Toolkit.[9][10]
Currency of the material
The systems the courses teach changed several times between 2023 and 2025, so a recorded course can date quickly.[3][4][6] Written guides and memberships address this with updates; iPullRank added four chapters to its manual in February 2026, and the Learning AI Search roadmap reached version 4 in March 2026.[17][26]
